This is the title of an approach to the series Femmes d´Alger, beyond understanding it as an homage to Eugène Delacroix. To this end, on the one hand, we will look at the historical context of a France enmeshed in an anticolonial war in Algeria, whose shocking events coincide with the creation of these works. On the other hand, we will address Picasso’s efforts to combine art history and the historical present in this series. Particularly relevant to this analysis is the fact that the series was first presented to the public within the exhibition Picasso 1900-1955, which took place in Paris in 1955, sharing a hall with Guernica (1937).
